Recently, a set of pictures have spread on social media, which some described as the process of the splitting of the moon. So what is the secret of the splitting of the moon?
With the spread of these images widely, whether in the Arab world, because of the religious implications of the splitting of the moon, or in the whole world due to the strangeness of these images, the scientists of the US space agency NASA came out to reveal the secret of the mystery.
Did the moon actually split, as it appears in the pictures?, or do the widespread images of this phenomenon have other explanations for the US space agency.
With the spread of these images, some began to talk about the fact that the moon had already split into two parts in the past and then re-combined again.
Many people circulated these images, which they said fit closely with the beginning of Surat Al-Qamar in the Holy Qur’an, “The hour has approached and the moon has split.”
And NASA said that these circulating images are evidence of a rupture in the lunar crust due to the decrease in its mass as its interior cooled.
Surat al-Qamar has many interpretations, as some say that what was mentioned in some Islamic narrations, the moon actually split at the time of the Prophet to prove his prophecy in front of its deniers.
While other interpretations say that this verse is talking about the signs of the end of times, and not about something that actually happened in the past.
And the pictures published now on social networking sites that carry messages in Arabic and English are old pictures of the surface of the moon.
These images were first published in August 2010, and they show the surface of the moon through the lens of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
NASA launched the probe for the first time from Earth's surface on June 19, 2009, and it entered lunar orbit four days later.
